More Fun Than Run

This is a run even I could complete! 🏃 Registration is now open for the shortest fun run in Whatcom County called the Wander to Wander 1K, which “Starts with donuts. Ends with beer. 0.62 miles of fun in between!” Perfect!

This mini-marathon starts at the Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center’s office on Prospect St with complimentary donuts, coffee, and fun activities before participants run, walk, or roll the 0.62-mile course to Wander Brewing for a beer or root beer, raffle, and awards.

This fundraiser supports Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center’s free and sliding-scale conflict resolution services, helping thousands in our community navigate disputes. Mark your calendar for Saturday, June 7—arrive at 10:30 AM, race at 11:00 AM, and wrap up the festivities by 1:00 PM. Register to run!

The correct answer to the last question: “What is the cause of the exposed rock face visible on Lummi Island's east side?” was an Abandoned Stone Quarry.

The Lummi Island Quarry opened in 1934 and operated intermittently, producing rock and gravel for use in regional cities. In 2013, the final operator filed for bankruptcy.

In 2015, the Lummi Island Heritage Trust purchased the 105-acre property. Alongside partners like Whatcom County, the Puget Sound Marine and Nearshore Grant Program, and the Rose Foundation, the trust is working to restore 20 acres of upland and 500 linear feet of shoreline that have been impacted by years of gravel mining activity. Watch a time-lapse of a dock being removed at the site. 👇️

The quarry is now part of the Aiston Preserve, named after an Aiston family that homesteaded the land in the 1940s.
