🐹 The Sloth Doth Protest 🦥🦥

Good morning, Bellingham. This is your Friday update from The Hamster Wheel.

As I write this today, our one-year-old cat Moira is serenading me with an impressive barrage of caterwauls.

There’s a veterinary cone in someone’s near future. 😼

Have fun, and stay safe out there!

Snipe a Birdhouse for Wildlife Rehab

Get your bids in! Monday is your last opportunity to submit bids in the Whatcom Humane Society’s Online Birdhouse Auction, filled with handcrafted birdhouses and art created by Bellinghamsters. There are funny ones, beautiful ones, and a few are downright bizarre. Something for everyone!

Some have sold via the “buy now” purchase option, but there are a ton of lovely creations left. Find a birdhouse.

100% of the proceeds from this auction benefit the WHS Wildlife Rehabilitation Center and their efforts providing care and services for injured and orphaned wildlife in Whatcom County.

👆️ That’s a baby river otter. Nothing to do with this auction. I saw it on the WHS Instagram page and couldn’t help myself. 🥰

Options Students Stage "Working" with TheatreWorks Mentors

Today, Options High School students and Bellingham TheatreWorks launch Working: A Musical, which runs this weekend and next. Funded by a Big Idea grant from the Bellingham Public School Foundation, this partnership brings professional theatre mentorship to students in acting, music, and technical roles.

The production includes nine Options students and seventeen Bellingham TheatreWorks adults. Drama teacher Leslie Adamson notes the value of TheatreWorks’ expertise. “They have a wealth of experience that I don’t have and that students don’t have, and they will be able to lend their experience and expertise on a 1:1 mentorship program.” Hear more from Leslie in the promo video below:

Based on Studs Terkel’s 1974 book about work’s meaning, the show features songs by Stephen Schwartz, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and James Taylo. It portrays jobs like receptionist, trucker, and teacher, offering a look at working life. Get tickets.

In other news…

🦥 In keeping with Bellingham being as weird as we all know it is… The Washington State DOT posted this week that they removed a large stuffed sloth from a tree overlooking northbound I-5 south of town.

They note that removing this oversized stuffy took “a break in the weather, a 125-ft bucket truck & some true skills.” Needless to say, feedback in the comments section was mixed. 😆

🎨 Beginning today and running through the weekend, the Whatcom Art Center in Fairhaven is opening its doors from 11 AM to 7 PM for the Sehome High School Art Show—a free celebration of young talent, exhibiting ceramics, watercolors, sculptures, and visual arts from students

The Sehome High School Art Show is a chance to witness student creativity in action and cheer on these talented teens. Open to all, this exhibit at Whatcom Art Center is a great way to spend a rainy March day. Details.

🐟️ Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA) and the City are teaming up on a Community Work Party at Happy Valley Park this Saturday (March 22nd). This is an opportunity to improve habitat by removing invasive species and mulching to protect young native plants.

📸 COB

These work parties are a lot of fun, and a great place to meet your neighbors while supporting the community. 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 As of writing this there are eleven spots left! Register to participate.

Crash an Open House

1702 Northshore Drive (Open Sat 11-1 PM, Sun 12-2 PM)
This is the lakeside mansion everyone wishes someone in their family owned. Swim, boat, 4-beds, 5-baths, fish off the dock, and gorgeous… plus, just across the bay from Silver Beach. Listing.

1003 Girard Street (Open Sat, Sun 12-3 PM)
We drive past this cute house daily and I love its location. My dream for Bellingham is a richer diversity of multifamily, residential, and locally-owned businesses in our neighborhoods. This corner of F St. and Girard is a fabulous example of how this could look. Listing.
