🐹 Searching for Silvers 🐟️🐟️
Good morning, Bellingham. This is your Friday update from The Hamster Wheel.
We’ve never intended for this newsletter to focus on crime or tragedy, but sometimes, an event may overwhelm our best intentions. Last week, on Halloween, an 11-year-old girl was killed in the north county when a driver collided with her family’s car. Our hearts break for Yaretzi’s loved ones and all the potential lost with her passing.
If you would like to support Yaretzi’s family, donations can be made on their GoFundMe page.

Holly Street Bike Lane Pilot Evaluation
The B’ham Public Works Department released a draft evaluation of its summer-long pilot project, which tested two bike lane models along Holly Street in downtown Bellingham.
The project tested the impact of a buffered lane from Ellis Street to N State Street and a parking-protected lane from N State Street to Bay Street. It also created the most perplexing intersection imaginable at Bay and Holly 😵 (my take, not theirs).
The buffered model includes a paint-only buffer between the bike lane and the adjacent motor vehicle traffic. In contrast, the parking-protected model nests the bike lane between a line of parked cars and the curb.
The evaluation states three conclusions:
“The bike lane increas[ed] bike ridership downtown and outperform[ed] adjacent bike lanes”
“Speed was decreased for drivers downtown.”
“The current design of the bike lane is unpopular and deemed unsafe by the community and will need to be redesigned.”
Search for Silvers in Fishtrap Creek
The Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA) is hosting a Salmon Discovery Program event at Bender Fields Park in Lynden this Saturday (Nov 9) from 12-3 PM.
Participants will search for coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) in nearby Fishtrap Creek, connect with fellow community members, and learn more about NSEA’s vital work in our area. Details.
For those seeking a more hands-on experience, NSEA is also holding a Planting Prep Party at Kenney Creek in Deming from 9 AM to 12 PM on the same day.
Team up with NSEA and the Whatcom Land Trust to prepare the land for next year's planting along this tributary of the Nooksack River, home to Chinook salmon. Volunteers will spread mulch to improve soil health. Details.

Crash an Open House
3762 Hannah Court (Open Fri 4-6, Sat 2:30-4:30, Sun 1-4)
This house has the cutest front! Love the landscaping and the tight-knot cedar over the entrance. Somehow, this darling street-side is hiding a 3000+ sqft home!! It’s huge back there. 🤣 A fun one to check out if you have time. Listing.
620 Fieldston Road (Open Sat 12-2 PM)
This house is just gorgeous. I’d be happy just camping on that back deck!! …and maybe occasionally sneaking into one of those luxurious bathrooms. Listing.
