🐹 Gourds Gone Wild 🎃🎃

Good morning, Bellingham. This is your Wednesday update from The Hamster Wheel.

Does anyone else buy a new set of pumpkin carving tools every year 🙄? We have a healthy collection of flimsy pumpkin saws.

Whatcom County’s pumpkin patches never disappoint. In this edition, we are sharing a few of our favorites. They are guaranteed fun for the kids and the perfect opportunity for fall family photos.

“Gourds Gone Wild” Ripe and Ready

Pumpkin season has arrived in Whatcom County, and local farms are packed with pumpkin patches and seasonal fun! Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly day out or just the perfect pumpkin, there’s something for everyone.

Home Farm U-Pick is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9-5 and Fridays through Sundays from 9-6. With no admission fee, you can wander the farm, visit the pig pens, enjoy tractor train rides, and pick heirloom pumpkins. Don’t miss their Kids Costume Weekend on October 18-20, where kids in costume get a mini pumpkin and a treat!

Visit Dan Cramer’s Western Town, every Friday through Sunday from 10-5. Enjoy draft horse trolley rides, a hay maze, pony rides, farm animals, and plenty of pumpkins.

At Stoney Ridge Farm, you’ll find wagon rides, a corn maze, farm animals, and a huge pumpkin and squash patch. Enjoy fresh cider and pumpkin donuts. Open Fridays from 12-5 and Saturdays from 10-5, admission is $6 per person, which includes access to all activities.

Looking for something closer to town? Pick a pumpkin of any size from the trailer across from Glynn’s Pub on the Guide Meridian for only $5. Or, buy four and get one free! They’re open daily with decent weather, usually around 12-5.

In more news…

If the clouds part on Thursday (Oct 17th), we’ll have a chance to witness a Super Hunter’s Moon. October's full moon is traditionally called a Hunter’s Moon; this year, it is the closest full moon, making it a supermoon. This occurs when the moon is near its closest point to earth, known as perigee, making it appear larger and brighter in the night sky.

Feeling the Halloween spirit? The Pickford Cinema is showing the 80’s horror/comedy classic The Lost Boys tonight (Oct 16) at 7:45 PM as part of their Bad Blood Halloween Series.

Also, on Thursday, you can expect to hear tsunami warning sirens in Bellingham and Whatcom County as part of International ShakeOut Day. This annual event, held on the third Thursday of every October, offers an opportunity to learn about earthquake and tsunami risks in our area and discover how to protect yourself. The Bellingham Office of Emergency Management will staff a booth at the base of the tsunami siren in Squalicum Harbor from 9 AM to noon to provide information and answer questions.

Local Business Updates

Haggling With Local Folk

Westside Pizza Opens in Silver Beach Neighborhood

Westside Pizza is now open in the Silver Beach Neighborhood. It's in the same building but diagonally opposite the Silver Beach Grocery. You’ll find it at the intersection of Northshore Drive and Northshore Drive… yeah, you know the hairpin turn. Westside offers dine-in, delivery, and takeout service. This is a great addition in a long-underutilized location.

Last Chance to Enjoy the Portal Container Village in 2024

Bellingham’s waterfront Portal Container Village will be closing for the season on November 3rd. This will mark the end of the 2024 summer season at the popular destination that hosts the Kulshan Brewing Trackside beer garden, a host of food truck options, mini golf course, and a newly added Bin 13 Wine Bar. Take the kids for a spin at the Pump Track while you sip on a bevy or chow some snacks… but do it before the end of the month!

Whatever Floats Your Boat

56’ Custom Trawler Motor Yacht
Nothing says Puget Sound like a live-aboard Trawler. I like to imagine puttering around the south end of Lummi surrounded by polished teak and a solid steel hull. Listing.

Naval Mine Sweeper Live Aboard Conversion
This hull was built for the US Navy in 1965 with a superstructure of fiberglass over a wood hull. Not just anyone can say they vacay in a converted mine sweeper 💥. Listing.
