🐹 Fur-ociously Cozy🐕️ 🐩

Good morning, Bellingham. This is your Wednesday update from The Hamster Wheel.

You're not alone if you’re feeling frazzled by this election season. I think most of us are longing for a sense of normalcy. We look forward to watching winter storms, warm soups, and hanging out with our kids.

Be safe out there.

Keep a Canine Cozy This Winter

The Whatcom Humane Society has asked for help collecting blankets for their shelter pups. They are looking for new (or quality used) blankets to keep everyone warm this fall and winter. If you have extra blankets that fit the bill, drop them off at the Division Street shelter Tues-Sun 11 AM-6 PM. Delilah (see below) and friends will thank you!! 🐕️

Woodworker Alert!! 🔨🔨 WHS also announced its Annual Birdhouse Auction fundraiser, in which the public can build and donate birdhouses or decorate one for sale in an online auction held in March 2025. I noticed they’re low on undecorated houses, so I’m sure donations would be greatly appreciated.

The auction results page from last year shows that almost 200 creatively decorated houses brought the Humane Society nearly fifteen thousand dollars!!

Improv at the Upfront

The 2nd Annual Bellingham Improv Festival at the Upfront Theatre and New Prospect Theater starts tomorrow (Nov 7) and runs through Sunday.

The festival includes six shows from various improv teams performing in different styles. Workshops will explore various improv techniques and provide a chance to learn from experienced instructors. A festival pass offers access to all shows and discounts on workshops. Details and tickets.

In other news…

⛷️ The Mt. Baker Ski Area posted on Monday that knee-high snow has accumulated at Heather Meadows, bringing them closer to the total 24-36 inches of snowbase required to consider firing up the lifts and opening to the public. You can check out the update video here.

🏦 Whatcom Educational Credit Union is offering a free Fraud and Scams Awareness Seminar tomorrow (Nov 7) from 11 AM-12 PM at the WECU Education Center on East Holly. Topics will range from identifying “types of fraud” and “suspicious behavior” to “best practices to safeguard your personal and financial information.” Details.

🏘 Whatcom County Council will meet today (Nov 6) at 6 PM. You can review the agenda online. This public meeting is held in the Council Chambers at the County Courthouse or watch online.

❄️ Winter sports season is upon us, so it’s a good time to brush up on high-country safety. The American Alpine Institute is hosting an Avalanche Awareness Clinic tomorrow (Nov 7) from 7-8:30 PM at their new location on Home Road. This clinic will introduce “avalanche terrain assessment, winter snowpack analysis and rescue technique[s]” Details.

Whatever Floats Your Boat

1973 Boston Whaler
I grew up with a small fiberglass boat similar to this. It was the backdrop to many of my most cherished memories. Got a kid? Buy a boat and take them fishing!! 🎣 😁 Listing.

1956 Custom North Sea Trawler
The photo quality in this listing is atrocious but this vintage trawler looks amazing. It was built and fished in Scotland until it was brought to Seattle and converted to a yacht in the 90s. Dream life updated 🤩. Looks like it’s docked over in Anacortes. Listing.
